Dekalb Market: Maharlika & Robicelli's

The NOMination team went down to the Dekalb Market in Brooklyn, NY today. Their site describes the market as "... a new community destination in Downtown Brooklyn. Dekalb Market, is housed in a collection of salvaged shipping containers, that bring together Brooklyn’s creative entrepreneurs in a community setting that include an incubator farm, events and performance venue, and a collection of eateries and work-sell spaces."

So with that being said I just had to try some good eats while I was there. First round was a lovely little lunch from  Maharlika.

A few Filipino style food items on the menu with one person on staff for a not so busy afternoon. The server recommended the chicken bbq over rice, so I decided to run with it.

The chicken was served on a skewer and cooked on the spot. It was tender and had a delicious teriyaki style sauce on it. The rice was soft, delicate and very good. The shredded carrots were also good but not a star. Scallions were a pointless addition since they had zero flavor, however it adds a color and makes the dish prettier. For $6, its definitely worth it.

The NOMination team went for the Chocolate Graham cupcake and The Fanny.

The cupcake looks adorable but lacks in the taste department. The actual cake was dry and very crumbly. The buttercream was better but tasted manufactured rather than handmade. It also had some crazy strange coconut flavor that wasnt listed in the description. I was expecting a chocolate graham cracker cupcake as listed....this was not that.

This brownie look alike called "The Fanny" tastes like carrot cake rather than a chocolatey fudge brownie. It has cajeta and cinnamon in it...which I did not taste. A cinnamon flavor wouldn't have been as disappointing as the obvious carroty taste. Not what I was expecting from this "brownie"...I would not try it again.

Either way the Dekalb Market is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon with your friends or bring your kids. The B, Q and R train stop just short of a block away. Its kind of like an "in real life" Etsy mini-mall. If you try any foods there let me know.

Happy Tasting!
